Bridge over the Noordhollandsch Kanaal
Buiksloterweg and the first contours of the bridge,
with Willemsluis and Central Station in the background
Each day, numerous cyclists and pedestrians take the ferry across the IJ River. To make it easier to cross from IJplein and to reduce the burden on the Buiksloterweg ferry, a bicycle and pedestrian bridge will be built across the Noordhollandsch Kanaal. This bridge is being constructed between the Wagenaar Bridge and the Willemsluizencomplex, north of the Willem I-sluis.
Work started early in 2022, and there is a now a bike path in place. The foundation and fendering piles have been installed. On both banks, work is now underway on the abutments on which the bridge will rest and connect with the shore. Cyclists and pedestrians will be able to use the bridge by spring 2023. This will enable them to reach the ferry at IJplein and travel between neighbourhoods faster.
Amsterdam is always evolving. Work is being done all over the city, on building new housing estates, transforming existing buildings, improving streets, increasing sustainability and greening, or building a bridge. The Work in Progress column uses photos, maps and artist’s impressions to illustrate how a project is created.
