What’s the best way to visualise a city that’s both pedestrian-friendly and bicycle-friendly? Why, a map, of course! As Johan Olsthoorn, a researcher at Mobility and Public Space, explains: “On this map, we made sure to picture as many obstacles as possible, along with the available space and pedestrian activity. It gives you a good idea of the walkability of a large section of the city, which makes it easier to compare different streets and identify any problem areas. Many policymakers use the map – along with other data and information – to determine where and how pedestrian space might be further improved, for example for the city’s outdoor hospitality policy or its plan to introduce more low-traffic neighbourhoods."
